Dunedoo junior played RU for Easts Colts while studying at the Institute of Technology. A pacy, athletic speedster, Johnston signed with St George in 1980 and played for NSW on eight occasions between 1984 89. His highest rep honour came with selection as a reserve back in the one off Test against NZ in 1987. Johnston assumed the St George captaincy in 1989 but was forced to retire at the beginning of the 1990 season because of injury.
