Jockey sized halfback was a shock omission from the 1973 Kangaroo Tour after a great season with premiers Manly. RLW's Player of the Year that year, Mayes came to the club from Easts and was widely tipped to tour but he was overlooked despite his great game in Manly's grand final win over Cronulla. Returning to Easts, his timing proved immaculate. The prolific try-scorer played in consecutive grand final victories in 1974 75, before gaining belated Australian selection in the 1975 World Series.
