At age 22 Neville Smith was appointed the youngest captain-coach in the history of the St George club. Two years later, in 1941, the Dragons won their first premiership under his leadership. Smith came to the club after three seasons with Valleys in Brisbane from where he represented Qld in 1938. He went on to play for NSW in six matches during 1940-41 (captain in 1940) but did not play for Australia because of the outbreak of war.
