Promising centre with Wests Brisbane and Redcliffe was used as a reserve back in State of Origin in 1982 and 1984-85. Currie played for Leeds in 1984-85 and 1985-86 and came to Canterbury as a mid-season replacement for regular fullback Mick Potter. He broke into Queensland's State of Origin team as winger/centre in 1987 and was chosen in the centres in the Centenary Test the following year.
